Microneedling
Collagen induction therapy that smooths texture, refines pores, and softens fine lines and mild scarring

Overview
Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, uses a pen tipped with a cluster of very fine, sterile needles to create thousands of controlled micro-channels in the skin. Each one is tiny and closes within hours, but together they prompt the skin to repair itself by building fresh collagen and elastin. At Jade Aesthetics in Wheaton, IL, we use traditional microneedling for the concerns it does best: rough or uneven texture, enlarged pores, fine lines, and mild acne scarring.
The appeal of microneedling is that it works with your skin rather than on top of it. There is no heat, no acid, and no light, which is why it suits so many skin types and tones. The micro-channels also let topical products reach deeper than they can on intact skin, so the serum applied during your session does more than it would on the surface. If you are interested in exosomes or PRP as part of a microneedling plan, ask your provider what is appropriate for your skin.
Microneedling sits alongside Sylfirm X RF microneedling on our menu, and we are often asked which to choose. Patients from Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, Naperville, and across DuPage County appreciate that we offer both, because it lets us recommend the right tool rather than the only one we have. Traditional microneedling is the gentler series and the easier one on your budget. Sylfirm X adds radiofrequency energy for tightening and for stubborn concerns such as melasma and rosacea.

What to Expect
Consultation and Skin Review
Your provider examines your skin, reviews your history and current products, and confirms that microneedling is a better fit than Sylfirm X or a peel for your concern. Needle depth and the areas to be treated are planned here.
Cleanse and Numb
Makeup and oil are removed and a topical numbing cream is applied, then left to take effect so the session is comfortable.
Microneedling Pass
The pen moves across each area in a controlled pattern, with the depth adjusted to the thickness of the skin on the forehead, cheeks, nose, and around the mouth. A hydrating serum glides under the pen so the needles move smoothly and the skin stays comfortable.
Soothe and Protect
A calming, hydrating product is applied to the treated skin, followed by broad-spectrum sunscreen. You leave pink, similar to a mild sunburn.
Aftercare and Series Plan
You receive written aftercare and a recommended schedule, typically a series of three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, with follow-up visits timed to your results.
Is This Right for You?
Microneedling is a strong choice for patients with uneven texture, enlarged pores, fine lines, mild acne scarring, or skin that looks dull and tired, and for anyone who wants to build collagen gradually without the heat of an energy device. Because no heat or light is involved, it suits most skin tones, including deeper skin that may be cautious with lasers.
It is not recommended over active acne breakouts, cold sores, eczema, or psoriasis in the treatment area, during pregnancy, for patients with a history of keloid scarring, or for anyone currently taking isotretinoin. If your main concern is skin laxity, melasma, or persistent redness, your provider will likely steer you toward Sylfirm X instead, and will say so plainly at the consultation.
Aftercare
- Expect pinkness and a tight, warm feeling for 24 to 48 hours; it fades on its own
- Use only a gentle cleanser, a bland moisturizer, and sunscreen for the first 48 to 72 hours
- Avoid makeup for 24 hours while the micro-channels close
- Hold off on retinoids, exfoliating acids, and vitamin C for about five days
- Skip sweaty workouts, saunas, pools, and hot tubs for 48 hours
- Wear SPF 30 or higher daily and avoid direct sun for at least a week
- Do not pick at any light flaking; let it shed on its own
Results & Timeline
In the first few days you will notice a fresh, plump look as the skin recovers and holds hydration. Pinkness typically settles within 24 to 48 hours, and light flaking around day three to five is normal.
Collagen takes time to build, so the meaningful changes in texture, pores, and scarring appear gradually over four to six weeks after each session and keep improving across a series. Most patients see their best results from three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, followed by a maintenance session every few months. Your provider at Jade Aesthetics will set the number of sessions based on what you are treating.
What does microneedling do for your skin?
Microneedling triggers your skin's own repair process. The fine needles create thousands of controlled micro-channels, and the skin responds by sending collagen and elastin to the area to rebuild. Over the following weeks, that new collagen fills in fine lines, smooths rough texture, and tightens the walls of enlarged pores so they look smaller. Mild acne scarring softens as the scar tissue is gradually remodeled.
The channels also act as a delivery route. Skin is designed to keep things out, so most serums sit largely on the surface. For the short window after a microneedling pass, hydrating and repair-focused products can reach deeper, which is why a serum is applied during the session rather than after.
What microneedling does not do is heat the skin. That keeps it gentle and suitable for most skin tones, and it also means it is not the right tool for laxity or vascular concerns like rosacea, where the heat of an RF device is doing the work. Your provider at Jade Aesthetics in Wheaton will tell you which side of that line your skin falls on.
Microneedling vs Sylfirm X RF microneedling: which should you choose?
Traditional microneedling and Sylfirm X both use fine needles to create micro-channels, but Sylfirm X also delivers radiofrequency energy through those needles, heating the deeper layers of skin. That heat is the whole difference, and it decides which treatment fits your goal.
Choose traditional microneedling if your concerns are surface texture, enlarged pores, fine lines, mild acne scarring, or dull skin, and you want a gentler series that is easier on your budget. It is also the better route if you want to pair the channels with topical products such as exosomes or PRP, since there is no heat to manage alongside them. Downtime is typically 24 to 48 hours of pinkness.
Choose Sylfirm X if your concern is skin laxity, deeper acne scarring, melasma, or rosacea. The radiofrequency tightens tissue in a way needles alone cannot, and the device's pulsed mode is one of the few options for melasma and redness that does not tend to make them worse. It costs more per session and the heat adds some swelling, but for those concerns the results are in a different category. Our Sylfirm X page, linked under related treatments below, covers it in detail.
Neither is better across the board, and the honest answer is that some patients benefit from both at different points. We offer the two side by side at Jade Aesthetics in Wheaton so your provider can recommend the right one for your skin rather than the only one available.
How many microneedling sessions do you need?
Most patients see their best results from a series of three to six microneedling sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. A single session leaves the skin looking fresher for a few weeks, but the lasting change in texture, pores, and scarring comes from repeated collagen building, and each session adds to the last.
Where you fall in that range depends on the concern. Fine lines and dull texture often respond within three sessions. Enlarged pores and mild acne scarring usually sit at the higher end, since scar tissue remodels slowly. The four-to-six-week gap is not arbitrary; it gives the skin time to finish one round of collagen production before the next session begins.
After the initial series, a maintenance session every few months keeps the results going. Patients from Glen Ellyn and Naperville often pair maintenance microneedling with a DiamondGlow or a VI Peel in between, and your provider will help you sequence them so nothing overlaps while the skin is healing.
What is the downtime after microneedling?
Expect to look pink, similar to a mild sunburn, for 24 to 48 hours after microneedling. The skin may feel tight and warm for the first evening, and some patients notice light flaking around day three to five as the surface renews. Most people return to work the next day with a little mineral sunscreen, and makeup can go back on after 24 hours.
The first 48 to 72 hours are about keeping things simple: a gentle cleanser, a bland moisturizer, and sunscreen. Retinoids, exfoliating acids, and vitamin C wait about five days, and sweaty workouts, saunas, and pools wait 48 hours so the channels can close without irritation. Direct sun is the main thing to avoid for the first week, since freshly treated skin pigments easily.
If you have a specific date in mind, book microneedling at least a week ahead so any pinkness and flaking have resolved. For a true event-prep treatment with lighter needling and a faster bounce-back, ask about the Spotlight facial instead.
Can microneedling be combined with exosomes or PRP?
Microneedling is often paired with a topical such as exosomes or platelet-rich plasma (PRP), applied through the micro-channels while they are open. The channels are a delivery route, and both products are used in aesthetics to support the skin's repair and recovery after needling.
Whether an add-on makes sense for you depends on your skin, your goal, and your budget. Some patients get the results they want from microneedling with a hydrating serum alone. Others, especially those treating scarring or dullness, want to make each session count for more. Ask your provider at Jade Aesthetics what is appropriate for your plan, and they will walk you through the options available and what to expect from each.
