Sylfirm X vs Morpheus8: Which to Choose

J
Jade Aesthetics9 min read

Sylfirm X and Morpheus8 are the two radiofrequency microneedling devices people ask about most, and they are often described as interchangeable. They are not. Both put fine needles into the skin and deliver radiofrequency heat through the tips to build collagen and tighten tissue, but they were designed with different strengths in mind, and the right one for you depends on what you are trying to fix and what your skin can comfortably handle.

A note on where we stand: Jade Aesthetics in Wheaton, IL offers Sylfirm X for the face and body, and we do not offer Morpheus8. We chose Sylfirm X for reasons this article explains, but Morpheus8 is a good device that is the better fit for some patients, and we would rather you end up with the right treatment than the one we happen to have.

What is Sylfirm X?

#

Sylfirm X is a radiofrequency microneedling device made by VIOL Co., Ltd. that can deliver energy in two ways: a pulsed-wave mode designed to target abnormal blood vessels with less heat to the surrounding skin, and a continuous-wave mode that heats the dermis more broadly for tightening. It delivers bipolar RF through a 25-needle tip (a 5 by 5 grid) or an 18-needle tip, at depths adjustable from 0.3 mm to 4.0 mm in 0.1 mm steps.

Sylfirm X is FDA-cleared for dermatologic procedures for electrocoagulation and hemostasis. Its use for melasma, rosacea, and tightening is based on clinical studies and provider experience rather than a separate FDA clearance for each condition.

The pulsed-wave mode is what sets it apart. Instead of one continuous pulse, it delivers energy as a series of four short pulses. Providers use it for conditions like melasma and rosacea because it is designed to treat the abnormal vessels involved while limiting heat to the healthy tissue around them. That is why Sylfirm X is often the RF microneedling device a provider reaches for when the patient's main problem is redness, pigment, or a skin type that reacts badly to heat.

The continuous-wave mode behaves more like a conventional RF microneedling treatment: longer heating, deeper into the dermis, aimed at collagen and elastin for firming, texture, scars, and pores.

What is Morpheus8?

#

Morpheus8 is an FDA-cleared fractional radiofrequency microneedling device from InMode that is built for depth, reaching up to about 4 mm with its standard face tip and around 7 to 8 mm with the Morpheus8 Body tip, which lets it heat not only the dermis but the fat layer beneath it. It delivers bipolar RF through insulated needles, so most of the heat is released at the tips rather than along the shaft.

That depth is the reason Morpheus8 became well known for jowls, the neck, the lower face, and body areas such as the abdomen, arms, and knees. When RF heat reaches the subcutaneous layer it can contract tissue and remodel small pockets of fat, which is a different goal from surface-level skin quality. In 2024 the device received an additional FDA clearance specifically for soft tissue contraction.

How deep do Sylfirm X and Morpheus8 go?

#

Sylfirm X treats from 0.3 mm to 4 mm, while Morpheus8 treats from shallow depths to about 4 mm on the face and up to roughly 7 to 8 mm with its Body tip. On the face, the ranges overlap almost completely. The difference shows up at the extremes.

Sylfirm X's shallow settings are often used for pulsed-wave treatment of melasma and vascular conditions. Morpheus8's deepest body settings reach tissue that Sylfirm X does not target at all.

Morpheus8's insulated needles concentrate the energy at the tip, which protects the upper skin from heat when going deep. Either way, your provider chooses settings, not just a device.

Does Sylfirm X or Morpheus8 hurt more?

#

Morpheus8 is generally reported as the more uncomfortable of the two, mostly because it is usually run deeper and hotter; Sylfirm X is often described as a prickling warmth that is quite tolerable with numbing cream. Both are done with a topical anesthetic applied for about 30 to 45 minutes beforehand.

Discomfort tracks depth and energy more than brand. A Sylfirm X session run in continuous-wave mode at full depth will feel more intense than a shallow pulsed-wave pass, and a conservative Morpheus8 face treatment can be quite manageable. Deep Morpheus8 body treatments are the setting where people most often report needing more than topical numbing, and some clinics offer additional comfort measures for them.

If you know you are sensitive to pain, say so at your consultation. It changes how a provider plans the session on either device.

What is the downtime for Sylfirm X vs Morpheus8?

#

Sylfirm X downtime is typically one to three days of pinkness and mild swelling, while Morpheus8 downtime is more often two to five days, with pinpoint marks and occasional bruising that can last about a week after deeper treatments. Again, this follows depth and energy.

After Sylfirm X, most patients look flushed the evening of treatment and near normal within 48 hours. Tiny grid marks can be visible up close for a few days, and makeup is usually fine after about 24 hours.

After Morpheus8, expect redness and swelling that is more noticeable, a rough or gritty feel to the skin for several days as the micro-wounds heal, and sometimes small scabs or bruises, especially on the body. Most people are comfortable in public within a few days but plan social events a week out to be safe.

Which is safer for melasma, rosacea, and darker skin tones?

#

Sylfirm X's pulsed-wave mode is the more commonly chosen option for melasma, rosacea, and deeper skin tones, because it is designed to deliver short bursts of energy with less bulk heating of the surrounding skin. Morpheus8 is also used on all skin types, and its insulated needles are designed to keep heat away from the pigment-producing layer, but it is not usually the first choice for melasma specifically.

The concern with any heat-based treatment on melasma or Fitzpatrick IV to VI skin is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, where the skin responds to injury by making more pigment. Less bulk heat is thought to lower that risk. Small studies and clinic case reviews of pulsed-wave Sylfirm X for melasma have reported improvement with few side effects, though some patients have flared, which is why settings and spacing matter. Providers use the same mode for rosacea. No energy treatment is risk-free for pigment, so your provider should assess your skin before choosing settings.

None of this means Morpheus8 is unsafe for darker skin. Experienced providers treat deeper skin tones with it routinely at appropriate settings. It means that if pigment or redness is your primary concern, you should be asking about a device that treats those directly rather than one that is mainly built for tightening.

Which is better for skin tightening and fat remodeling?

#

Morpheus8 is the stronger choice when the goal is deep tightening of the lower face, neck, or body, or reducing small pockets of fat, because it reaches the subcutaneous layer that Sylfirm X does not treat. Sylfirm X tightens too, particularly mild to moderate laxity in the mid-face, jawline, and neck, but it works within the dermis.

A useful way to think about it: if what bothers you is the quality of the skin itself, its texture, tone, pores, fine lines, scarring, and mild sag, Sylfirm X covers that ground well and gently. If what bothers you is a heavier jowl, a softening jawline that has more to do with fat and deep tissue than skin surface, or laxity on the abdomen, arms, or knees, Morpheus8's depth is the reason to seek it out.

How many sessions of Sylfirm X or Morpheus8 do you need?

#

Both devices are usually done as a series of about three to four sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, followed by maintenance once or twice a year. Some Morpheus8 protocols call for fewer, more aggressive sessions; some Sylfirm X plans for melasma or rosacea call for more, gentler ones.

Results build gradually, because they depend on your body producing new collagen. Expect early changes in tone and texture within a few weeks and firmness continuing to improve for three to six months after the final session. Your provider will set the exact number for your plan based on your skin and goals, and it is reasonable to ask how they will decide whether you need a fourth.

Which costs more, Sylfirm X or Morpheus8?

#

Morpheus8 sessions can be priced higher than Sylfirm X sessions at clinics that offer both, mainly because they are usually deeper, longer, and cover larger areas, but the total cost of a series depends more on the treatment area, the number of sessions, whether add-ons like exosomes are included, and the local market than on the device name.

Things that push the cost of either treatment up or down:

  • Treatment area. Full face costs more than a targeted zone; face and neck more than face; body areas are priced separately.
  • Number of sessions. Series packages usually reduce the per-session price.
  • Add-ons. Exosomes, PRP, or a post-treatment serum add to the cost.
  • Who performs it. Physician-performed treatments often cost more than those done by a nurse or aesthetician under supervision.

Ask for the total for your planned series rather than the single-session figure so you can compare clinics fairly.

Which one is right for you?

#

Choose Sylfirm X if your main concerns are melasma, rosacea, redness, uneven tone, texture, pores, acne scars, or mild laxity, especially if you have a deeper skin tone or sensitive skin and want short downtime; choose Morpheus8 if your main concerns are deeper laxity in the lower face and neck, fat remodeling, or body tightening and you can accept a longer recovery.

A quick checklist:

  • Melasma or rosacea: Sylfirm X, pulsed-wave mode.
  • Darker skin tone with any concern: either can work; ask about heat management, and lean Sylfirm X for pigment.
  • Fine lines, texture, pores, acne scars: either; Sylfirm X for gentler recovery.
  • Neck bands: Botox, which is FDA-approved for platysma (neck) bands. RF microneedling does not treat the muscle that causes them.
  • Jowls and submental fullness: Morpheus8, or ask about CoolSculpting for fullness under the chin.
  • Abdomen, arms, knees, stretch marks: Morpheus8 Body for laxity and fat; Sylfirm X for the skin quality and stretch marks.
  • Need to be presentable in two days: Sylfirm X.
